CHINESE NEW YEAR: YEAR OF THE DRAGON
January 23, 2012 and ends February 9, 2013
2012 is the Year of the Dragon in the Chinese calendar. The Year of the Dragon is particularly significant:
it is a time when people initiate bold projects, make large investments, and prefer to
marry. In Chinese culture the dragon is honoured as a symbol of the imperial family. It stands
for strength, energy, setting an example and good luck.
The limited-edition Year of the Dragon porcelain items are elaborately designed to include
opulent colors with touches of gold – inspired by Chinese fine silks, traditional clothing and
delicate ceramics. The dragon depicted on the porcelain articles of the Year of Dragon series is
powerfully rendered in blue and turquoise, reflecting his strength and his position as inhabitant
of the sky, the seas, the rivers, the fog and the rain, a being possessing the power to be visible
or invisible.
The positive force of the design is highlighted by the use of a strong red tone for the rim decoration,
a colour said to keep all evil at bay. This is combined with orange and yellow, colours
that symbolise success and prosperity, while rich gold elements underscore the decorative,
ornamental style.
