MOM'S HOLIDAY NUT ROLL
Catherine Chovanec's Holiday Nutroll

TAKEN FROM THE RECIPE BOOK OF CATHERINE CHOVANEC. IT WASN'T CHRISTMAS UNLESS THIS NUTROLL WAS SERVED AT THE BREAKFAST TABLE.

Mix together 1 cup canned milk undiluted,  1/2 cup sugar, 1 tsp salt
Dissolve 2 packets of dry yeast in 1/2 cup warm water.
Mix the yeast with the first 3 ingredients.
Stir in 2 whole eggs , 2 egg yolks  & 3/4 cup shortening
Mix first with spoon & then with hands 4 1/2 to 5 cups flour.  Work until not sticky,  (The dough hooks of your electric mixer come in handy at this time if you are not as strong as arm as the ladies were in the early part of this century.)
Raise double in a covered bowl for 2 hours.
Knead. Raise for another hour or until double in size.
Divide in four parts,  Roll on floured surface.  Brush with melted butter or margarine.   Spread with nut mixture.  Roll as you would a jelly roll.
Place on long cookie sheets.  2 to a sheet.  Bake at 375 degrees for 30 - 35 minutes.    Remove from oven.  Brush tops with melted butter or margarine.   Cool completely before cutting'

NUT MIXTURE
Scald 1 cup of milk in a heavy pot.  (Nowadays this can be done easily in your microwave. Use a 2 quart size microwave measuring cup.)
Turn off heat,
ADD 1  Pound bag of nuts.   These nuts should be ground finely.
Add 3 eggs, 1 at a time, mixing thoroughly.
Add 1 1/4 cups of sugar, 1/4cup  water & 1 tsp vanilla.

Turn on heat & let it come to a boil while stirring. (1 minute) (Again, here you can heat this in your microwave until it bubbles.  Just heat it in 30 second increments until it bubbles & becomes a spreadable consistency.  Remember that your microwave mixture will continue to cook after you take it out.)

Cool before slicing.
