Bowls By Kosta Boda
& Orrefors
The early 18th century was not a good time to start new companies. The long
wars of Charles XII had severely impaired commerce, but efforts began gradually
to repair the economy of the nation. It was at this time that the governors of
Kronoberg County and Kalmar County, General Anders KOskull and General George
Bogislaus STAel von Hoistein, founded Kosta Glassworks in the province of
Smaland. The name was created through combining the first syllables of their
names, KO-STA.
In that period skilled workers were not available in Sweden, and consequently
four glass blowers were called to Kosta from Germany, then the leading glass
producing nation. They were the first in the long series of skilled craftsmen
who have made possible the continued existence of Kosta for more than 250 years.
Since 1990 Kosta Boda through a merger with Orrefors, is part of a larger group
of nine different glassworks. All of them are situated in the south of Sweden,
in a region called the Kingdom of Glass
